So use the same basic approach:. Tell your reader just enough to make her care about your main character, then get to the the problem, the quest, the challenge, the danger—whatever it is that drives your story. Rather than recite how a Frenchman got to America, merely mention the accent he had hoped to leave behind when he emigrated to the U. Short stories are, by definition, short. Every sentence must count. If even one word seems extraneous, it has to go. In a short story this can often be accomplished quickly, as long as it resounds with the reader and makes her nod.
The rest of the story is him telling the cabbie how deeply his life choices have hurt his family. The story ends with the taxi pulling into view of his childhood home, only to find not only the porch light on, but also every light in the house and more out in the yard. That ending needed no elaboration. The lights say it all. All writing is rewriting. And remember, tightening nearly always adds power. Omit needless words. Learn to tighten and give yourself the best chance to write short stories that captivate your reader.
Writing contests are great because the winners usually get published in either a magazine or online—which means instant visibility for your name. Such publications cater to audiences who love stories written in their particular literary category. While, admittedly, this market calls for a more intellectual than mass market approach to writing, getting published in one is still a win.

Or cover up your first two paragraphs. Or three. Or scan your first page looking for the most arresting opening line. You know a bit about the person so you can imagine them in a story. The same applies to characters from fairy tales or from popular stories that already exist. I was recently judging a creative writing competition for a big network of hundreds of international schools. Thousands of students from all over the world write stories for this competition every year, and every year the organisation compiles a list of the characters or character names that crop up over and over.
Most popular this year: Cinderella. Closely followed by, guess who, Christiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. There were superheroes on the list too, including Superman, Batman, The Hulk and One Direction yes, of course they count as superheroes. James Bond was there, alongside, for some reason, the Tooth Fairy. So think twice before grabbing an existing character or personality for your story.
Fan fiction is great, and a wonderful way to start out as a writer. It can help you hone your skills and be a launchpad for your own imaginative journeys. Make it your own. Change the name.
Change the situation. What are you really trying to say about that character? Try exaggerating an aspect of the personality to make your point bolder. Or, for a quick fix, mash two things together: a footballer superhero. When writing competitions are split into age categories, I see a really odd trend in the stories.
Now, like Miss Brill herself, the "ermine toque" is alone. But to Miss Brill, this is all just a stage performance with the band playing music that suits the scene , and the true nature of this curious encounter is never made clear to the reader.
Could the woman be a prostitute? Possibly, but Miss Brill would never consider this. She has identified with the woman perhaps because she herself knows what it's like to be snubbed in the same way that playgoers identify with certain stage characters. Could the woman herself be playing a game? We see that Miss Brill is living vicariously, not so much through the lives of others, but through their performances as Miss Brill interprets them. Ironically, it is with her own kind, the old people on the benches, that Miss Brill refuses to identify:.
