Now girls participate also in this motivating exercise in public speaking. We have had both boys and girls contests since , and have had winners at the zone and district levels many times. Many of our contestants have gone on to become leading citizens in many communities and we like to think that a bit of their success can be traced to the public speaking opportunity we initiated.

Optimist Sponsored Activities: Jeffersonville Optimist
It is for youth under nineteen years of age as of December 31 of the current school year and attending the 10th, 11th, or 12th grade. There is no minimum age. Each contestant shall prepare his or her own speech. The contestant may receive advice in the preparation of the speech and may make minor changes or improvements in the speech at any time. A student who has won a District Oratorical scholarship is not eligible to compete at any level of the competition again.
The Club level competition will be held in early April Students must have a hearing loss of 40 decibels or more in order to be eligible to participate. Participants must submit an audiogram done within 24 months of the date of the contest from a qualified audiologist.
The Essay Contest is sponsored by Optimist International to give young people the opportunity to write about their own opinions regarding the world in which they live. In additional to developing skills for written expression, participants also have the opportunity to win a college scholarship!
Annual District Essay Contest
The guidelines require that contestants be under the age of 18 as of October 1, and attending school in the United States, Canada, or the Caribbean.
